Membership Niche Selection Tips
Let’s talk about niche selection. This is very important to ensuring the profitability of your membership website.
First – Look for Fanatics
The first step in developing a profitable membership business is to find a market with fanatics in it. Fanatic is defined as someone with an irrational enthusiasm. These are the people you’re looking for because they are so enthusiastic they’re willing to spend money on their topic of fanaticism. Now that we know what we’re looking for, let’s talk about how to find them…
- Here’s something you may not have considered – magazines! We’re so internet-based these days, it’s easy to forget about them. Because it’s becoming harder and harder to keep print periodicals profitable these days, if you see a magazine on the shelves, you know it’s making money. And that means there are lots of people interested in it. This is a very good indication that it’s a good niche for you to go into.
- Pay attention throughout the day in your regular activities. See what people are talking about on the radio, TV, at parties, in public, etc. If people are talking about it, they are interested in it. And this means there may be a market for information about it.
- Don’t forget about clubs and organizations. If there are enough people to to build a club, there are certainly enough people to start a membership site on the same topic. Conventions are expensive to hold and attend, so if one if going on that’s another strong indication of a good niche to go into with your membership website.
- And of course there are all the things you have an interest in, too! If you’re interested in something, it’s highly likely others are, too. The icing on the cake here is that you get to build a business doing something you love.
- One simple and easy way to find out what’s hot is Google Trends. This service shows you the current most popular search terms. These are the things people are actively searching for in Google. They’re searching because they want information. Hot topics that people are excited about make great niches for your membership website.
Step 2 – Determine the financial feasibility
After selecting a possible niche to build your membership site around, the next step is to find out if it’s a profitable niche to be in. An easy way to determine this is to figure out if anyone else is making money in this niche.
OK, how do we figure that out?
- First go to Google and type in the name of your niche followed by “blog” and “forum”. If there are blogs and forums related to it, that’s a good sign. This means there is a large group of people already assembled for you to market to.
- Check Amazon, eBay and Google Shopping to find out if others are making and selling products in your niche. It’s a good sign if there are because it tells you people are making money here.
- Watch Google Adwords for a period of time and look for ads the run again and again. Adwords ads are expensive, so people only run them repeatedly if they are profitable. And to be profitable, they have to be selling products and making money.
Last, but not least… How hard will it be to break into this niche?
After figuring out a good niche and determining that other people are making money in it, the last thing to do is decide if you will be able to enter the market. Here are some things to look at to figure this out:
- Figure out what kinds of products people are interested in. If it’s mostly physical products, coaching and live seminars, then it will be harder to break into this niche. Membership websites based on information are the easiest to start and maintain.
- The next thing to look at is the competition. You don’t want to try to break into a saturated marketing, so figure out how many people are already selling in this niche.
- Size vs. Competition. Some competition is good. It means that this is a profitable market. And as long as the size of the market is large enough to support the competition, you’re fine.
- How quickly do people in this market make buying decisions and are the ready to buy? Every market is different. Sometimes people are looking for information and are ready to pay for it right now. And sometimes it takes weeks, months or even years for them to make the decision to purchase.
Summing it all up
So far, we’ve talked about exactly what it takes to pick a great niche: One with a hungry crowd of fanatics, who are ready to spend money on information about their topic. And you’ve determined your barrier to entry is small enough to give it a go. Now that you’ve prepared properly, you’re success is 99% guaranteed. How to actually run your membership website is the only thing left to talk about…

How to Get Paid for Blogging
Blogging is a fun thing to do, but you can actually make money from it too. Earning money by blogging is quick and easy and anyone can do it. You don’t even need awesome writing skills, just some enthusiasm and expertise on a particular topic.
There are two ways that you can make money from blogging. The second technique below is easier to get money fast, but the first technique is better if you want more longer term stability.
1) Make Money With Your Own Blog
This technique involves setting up your own blog. The idea is that you will setup a blog about a very specific topic that you are knowledgeable about. It is important to choose a topic that you can actually write about. Don’t just pick niches that might pay better, because if they are boring, you will end up writing a bad blog.
It is essential that your blog has energy and enthusiasm. This is only possible when you are writing about something you are passionate about. Some writers can pull this off in any niche, but I can tell you that it’s hard work writing about bland topics.
OK, so once you choose a topic, you need to get your blog started. You can either buy your own domain name and install a blog or use a free service such as blogger.com. Starting out with Blogger is recommended because it’s so simple. You just sign up, choose a blog name and you can start posting. If you go with your own domain name, you will also need to buy hosting (around $5/month) and you will need to install blog software, such as WordPress (free).
Once your blog is setup, the next step is awesome content. Don’t worry about making money from the blog too early. That will come later. Initially you need to build up the content and the user base. Once you have a decent sized user base, then you can consider the monetization options. You can learn more about blog monetization here.
Once you get your blog established, try to build relationships with other bloggers in similar subject areas. This can help boost your exposure and traffic. The more links that you get into your site, the higher you will rank.
2) Write Blog Posts and Get Paid
If you want cash for your blog posts, the quickest way to do this is posting for others or writing blog content for websites. Usually the content will be sold and then posted to one or more blogs. The content will most likely not be tagged as yours and you won’t be able to build your own profile using this strategy.
You can make great money doing this. I know of many bloggers that are earning a few thousand per month by writing for others. They usually have their own blog too, from which they earn another few thousand. You can earn anywhere from $5-50 per blog post. This can start adding up, especially if you are writing 20-30 blog articles per day.
